This walk is a brilliant way to see the heart of Stirling Town and its most iconic landmarks in one easy, scenic loop. Starting in the town centre, you’ll climb up into the old streets of Stirling before reaching Stirling Castle, sitting high on its volcanic rock with sweeping views across the city and out to the Ochils.
From the castle area you can wander through the peaceful Castle Graveyard, a historic spot with centuries-old stones and a real sense of Stirling’s past. Just beyond, the route joins the Back Walk — a beautiful raised path that traces the old defensive walls and gives you one of the best viewpoints over the rooftops, the countryside beyond, and down towards the River Forth.
Dropping back into the old town, you’ll pass the striking Holy Rude Church, one of Scotland’s most important historic churches and a key part of Stirling’s story. Nearby is the atmospheric Old Town Jail, a distinctive building (and popular visitor attraction) that adds a darker, more curious chapter to the walk.
To finish, the route takes you past Cowane’s Hospital (often called Cowan’s Hospital), a 17th-century building that stands out for its character and history — a final reminder that Stirling’s streets are packed with stories, even on a short walk.
Overall, this is a perfect heritage-style walk: cobbled streets, big landmarks, and standout views — ideal for visitors, locals doing a gentle wander, or anyone wanting a compact route with maximum history.
